A firefighter holding his helmet thinking about his need for therapy for first responders

Therapy for First Responders in Toronto and Across Canada

Your job asks more of you than most people will ever understand. The decisions you make, the things you witness, and the responsibility you carry don't clock out when your shift ends.

At Jacob Damelin Therapy, I offer practical, confidential therapy for police officers, paramedics, and firefighters who want to address the psychological toll of their job, without being made to feel weak for doing so.

My approach is structured and goal-oriented. I want us to understand but not dwell indefinitely on your past. Instead, we'll build the skills to help you manage stress in the moment, process what's difficult, and show up fully at work and at home.

A "thank you first responders" sign

Services Offered

  • Therapy for first responders is for you if you're a police officer, paramedic, or firefighter dealing with any of the following:

    • Anxiety that doesn't go away when the shift ends

    • Sleep disruption from rotating shifts or hypervigilance

    • Feeling emotionally disconnected from your partner or kids

    • A difficult incident that's been harder to shake than expected

    • The sense that something is off, even if you can't name exactly what

You don't need to be in crisis to come to therapy. Most people who reach out are simply carrying more than they should have to carry alone.

  • In our first session, you'll have the opportunity to share what's brought you here and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. If you've never been to therapy before, I'll make space for any questions or hesitations you have. We go at your pace.

From there, our work together focuses on two things. First, building practical skills for managing in-the-moment stress, the kind that help you make split-second decisions under pressure. Second, developing tools for reflecting on difficult experiences so their impact doesn't accumulate and compound over time.

When combined, these strategies increase self-compassion, reduce self-blame, and support both prevention and recovery from the effects of occupational stress and trauma.

Between sessions, I may suggest exercises to help integrate what we've discussed into your daily life. Therapy is a collaboration, you bring your expertise on your own experience, and I bring the structure and tools to help you move forward.

Jacob Damelin who offers therapy for first responders in toronto

Why Therapy With Jacob

Many first responders hesitate to seek support because they're not sure a therapist will understand what their job actually involves. That concern is valid, and it's one I take seriously.

Your job often requires you to set aside difficult emotions in order to be there for others. In therapy, my hope is that by helping you process challenging moments, cope with daily stressors, and strengthen your relationships at home, you'll actually enhance your ability to do your job, while also improving your own well-being.

A few things you should know before booking:

  • Sessions are practical and structured, not open-ended venting. We'll identify clear goals and track progress.

  • Your confidentiality is fully protected. I will only disclose information if you indicate a risk to yourself or others, if a child is in danger, or if ordered to do so by a court. Nothing is shared with your employer, your department, or your colleagues, including any email correspondence.

  • Daytime appointments are available, Monday through Friday, 8am to 4pm, a practical option for first responders on night rotation or rotating shifts.

  • In-person sessions in Toronto, and online across Canada, so geography doesn't have to be a barrier.

It is an honour to work with first responders. The people who allow all of us to live safe and protected lives deserve the same quality of care they give to others.

My Approach

I use evidence-based, trauma-informed methods that are well-suited to the specific challenges first responders face.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Understanding and changing the cycles between your thoughts, feelings, and actions. CBT is practical, structured, and gives you tools you can use on your own long after therapy ends.

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): A structured approach to working through traumatic experiences — particularly useful after critical incidents. Focuses on reducing self-blame and building a more balanced perspective.

  • Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE): For clients dealing with the lasting effects of traumatic experiences on the job. PE helps reduce avoidance and process difficult memories in a controlled, supported way.

  • Mindfulness and Emotional Regulation: Tools for grounding, reducing rumination, and staying present — valuable both on shift and at home.

  • No. Everything discussed in our sessions is fully confidential, including any email correspondence. The only exceptions are situations where you indicate a risk to yourself or others, a child is in danger, or I am required to disclose by a court order. Nothing is shared with your employer, department, or colleagues.

  • Not without your consent, and never without preparation. CBT and CPT focus on challenging beliefs you developed as a result of a difficult experience, rather than dwelling on the event itself. PE does involve reimagining the event, but I will never force you to engage in this or any other treatment. Furthermore, we can stop any treatment and change course at any time if you decide it's not working for you.

  • The issues first responders most commonly bring to therapy, anxiety, poor sleep, work-life imbalance, and emotional disconnection, are exactly what CBT and other trauma-informed approaches are designed to address. We'll set clear goals at the outset and track progress as we go.

  • No. You can begin therapy at any time, no diagnosis or referral required.

  • Yes. I offer in-person sessions in Toronto and online sessions across Canada.

  • Yes. The $140 rate is available to both active-duty and retired police officers, paramedics, and firefighters.
